One of the fastest ways to give a bedroom a new look, but only if you get it measured correctly, is by replacing wardrobe doors. A few millimetres is all it takes for either the perfect fit, or doors that rub, stick, or even refuse to close. For made to measure wardrobe doors, contact www.happy-doors.co.uk/shop/products/bedrooms
Step 1: Get the measurement of the opening
Rather than measuring the existing doors, measure the wardrobe opening (the space that the doors are going to cover) first. Older doors may have been trimmed, become swollen and are uneven.
Measure width in three places: Top, mid and bottom
Take measurements of height: left, centre and right
Step 2: Check if it’s square
Wardrobes and walls are, in many cases, marginally out. If the figures differ, note it down as this impacts clearances and if you need scribing or adjustable hinges.
Step 3: Be aware of the type of doors you are fitting
Hinged doors require room for hinges and an even gap between the doors.
Sliding doors require track space and overlap (the visible opening does not equal the total door width).
Common mistakes to avoid:
Measure only once (always measure 3 times)
Forget skirting boards, coving and carpet thickness
Ignoring space for handles (as they can conflict in tight areas)
Overlooking dip places where doors can stick at the bottom.
Not quite sure, then take some photos and notes on all three measurements. The safest sizing for a tidy finish can be chosen with the help of an excellent supplier or fitter.
