Find Out How to Stop Slicing: 5 Causes And Simple Solutions

A slice is the most well known of golf frustrations – for a right-hander, starting out left and then curving hard to the right while losing distance. The vast majority of slices are caused by the clubface being open to the swing path at impact. Here are five of the most common causes  and corresponding simple fixes you can attempt on your own.

1) Grip is too weak

If you can see very little knuckles in your lead hand, the face almost always gets there open.

Simple solution: slightly rotate your lead hand so that you can see 2-3 knuckles.

2) Playing the ball too far forward in their stance

You may catch it late with a wide open face because the ball is too far forward.

Easy fix: recede by half a ball and check your alignment.

3) Alignment aimed left

A lot of slicers aim to their left, to allow for it and then swing more across the ball.

Tip: put some sort of stick down on the ground to aim square. Trust a straighter start line.

4) Over-the-top downswing

When the shoulders start swinging down it takes the club outside-in.

Just feel your hips move, then the arms dropping. Attempt some 50 percent swings slowly.

5) Trying to lift the ball

Scooping creates an open face and weak contact.

For a quick fix: concentrate on brushing the grass after impact (or descending slightly with irons).

However if your slice is bad, go for a short lesson as one simple setup change can save you months of frustration.
