Before we start printing your books we complete a preflight check to detect potential problems with your file that would result in costly reprinting.
Resolution and Colour Mode
For images it is generally acceptable to supply images at a minimum of 300 dpi at the printed size. Often, though, colour is an even greater issue. Files are often created in RGB for screen viewing, but must be converted to CMYK for printing, as UK printing industry standards recognise that there is considerable difference between colours for screen and print.
Bleed and Safe Zones
Typically book printers require a 3mm bleed on all edges and a safe area of at least 5mm within the trim area for any critical elements such as text.
Fonts and Embedding
Failure to embed fonts within the PDF (or outline the text prior to export) may result in the printed product displaying text in an alternate typeface, potentially unacceptable.

Proofing Before Sign-Off
A soft proof of your work is created on screen to check the layout and colours, whereas a hard-copy proof is much better for checking the accurate colour reproduction on specific paper types.
If all of this is adhered to prior to submission then it will save a lot of time and prevent the need for possible reprints.
